A Lesson from the ER

We spent 4 hours in the ER and added yet another sports injury to our list. I was grateful for the doctors, nurses and radiologists who tended to Siah’s swollen eye yet I was saddened as I watched him do his crossword puzzle with one eye.

“I think we are going to stick to golf,” I shared with one of the nurses out of frustration. He responded by sharing his own high school sports injuries and reminded me of one of the greatest benefits of youth sports. “Sports help build character,” he told me as he searched for a vein in Siah’s arm.

I looked away to avoid seeing the needle and blood then I responded to him, “And that is why we play.”
